Omella Go Card Reader FAQ

The Omella Go, technically known as the PAX D135, is a compact card reader that connects to the Omella app on an Android or iOS device through Bluetooth.

It is designed for cashiers and event staff who need to accept in-person payments at school events, fundraisers, fairs, and other activities.

Use this FAQ to prepare your reader, connect it to the Omella app, accept in-person payments, and troubleshoot common issues.

Before Your First Event

What should I do before using the Omella Go at an event?

Before your first live event:

  1. Review our Customer Guide: Firewall Settings.
  2. Share the firewall requirements with your school or district IT team.
  3. Connect to the same Wi-Fi network you plan to use during the event.
  4. Process a $1 test payment to confirm that the reader can connect and accept payments.
  5. Add each cashier to the appropriate Space as an Assistant.
  6. Give each cashier their own email address and account for easier tracking.
  7. Make sure each cashier can sign in to the Omella app.
  8. Charge the reader fully and keep the charging cable available.

If you need a payment page for your test, copy this template to your organization by clicking Save.

Why should I review the firewall requirements?

School and district networks often use firewalls, content filters, or TLS inspection. These security settings may block the services the Omella Go needs to connect and process payments.

Reviewing the requirements with your IT team before the event helps prevent connection and payment issues.

Why should I test using the event’s Wi-Fi?

A successful test on a personal or cellular network does not guarantee that the reader will work on your school’s Wi-Fi.

Testing on the same network you will use during the event can identify firewall restrictions in advance.

What should I do if the test payment does not work on the school’s Wi-Fi?

Try processing the payment using a cellular connection or another trusted network.

If the payment works on another network but not on the school’s Wi-Fi, the school’s firewall is likely blocking one or more required services.

Share our Customer Guide: Firewall Settings with your IT team and contact help@omella.com if you need assistance.

Can Omella help us prepare for our event?

Yes. Email the event date, time, and Omella payment page to help@omella.com. This allows our team to be prepared if you need assistance.

App and Device Setup

Where can I download the Omella app?

Download the Omella app and sign in using your existing Omella credentials: Apple Store or Play Store.

How do I turn on the Omella Go?

Press and hold the power button on the side of the reader until it beeps, then release it.

How do I connect the Omella Go to my phone or tablet?

Connect the reader through the Omella app, not directly through your device’s Bluetooth settings.

  1. Turn on the Omella Go.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone or tablet.
  3. Open the Omella app.
  4. Tap Enable Card Reader in the black bar at the top.
  5. Select Omella Go.
  6. Select your reader when it appears under Readers.
  7. Tap the arrow in the top-left corner to return to the dashboard.

Once connected, the black bar should display Reader Ready – Select a Space.

Why does the first connection take several minutes?

The first time you connect the Omella Go, the reader may need approximately five minutes to complete required updates.

Keep the reader turned on, sufficiently charged, and close to your phone or tablet until the update finishes. Future connections should happen almost instantly.

What does “Reader Ready – Select a Space” mean?

This message confirms that the Omella Go is connected and ready to accept payments.

Select the Omella Space or payment page you want to use.

Accepting Payments

How do I accept a payment with the Omella Go?

  1. Open the appropriate payment page in the Omella app.
  2. Select the items the customer wants to purchase.
  3. Continue to checkout.
  4. Select Charge with Card Reader.
  5. Ask the customer to tap, insert, or swipe their card as prompted.
  6. Wait for the payment confirmation.

Do not remove an inserted card until the app indicates that the transaction is complete.

What should a cashier do before starting the next transaction?

Confirm that the payment was approved and that the order is complete in the Omella app.

If the payment fails or the app displays an error, check whether the transaction appears in Omella before trying again. This helps prevent charging the customer twice.

How do I accept a contactless payment?

Contactless payments include tap-enabled cards and compatible digital wallets.

Ask the customer to hold their card, phone, or device within one inch of the contactless area at the top of the reader. Keep it close and still until the payment is recognized.

How do I accept a chip card?

Ask the customer to insert the card into the chip reader and leave it inserted until the payment is complete.

The card should not be removed until the Omella app indicates that the transaction has finished.

How do I accept a magnetic stripe card?

  1. Place the card inside the swipe slot.
  2. Make sure the magnetic stripe faces toward the reader.
  3. Keep the card fully inserted in the slot.
  4. Swipe the card smoothly in either direction.

If the card is not recognized, try again using one steady motion.

Can multiple cashiers use the same Omella Go?

The reader can be used by different cashiers as long as it is connected to the phone or tablet running the Omella app.

For events with multiple cashier stations, use a separate phone or tablet and reader for each station when possible. This helps each cashier process payments independently and reduces lines.

Cashier Access and Spaces

What role should I give to a cashier?

Add each cashier to the appropriate Space with the Assistant role.

The Assistant role is intended for cashiers, event staff, parents, students, or volunteers who need to collect payments without accessing your organization’s financial information.

Assistants can use assigned payment pages to process purchases, but they cannot:

  • See how much a page has collected
  • View reports
  • Issue refunds
  • Access financial totals or other financial data

How should I add cashiers to a Space?

Add each cashier individually to the Space where they will process payments:

  1. Open the desired Space.
  2. Add the cashier as a member.
  3. Assign the Assistant role.
  4. Use the cashier’s own email address.
  5. Confirm that the cashier can sign in to the Omella app.
  6. Repeat these steps for every Space where the cashier will work.

Cashiers can be added to multiple Spaces, but they must be added manually to each Space. Adding a cashier to one Space does not automatically give them access to other Spaces.

Should each cashier have their own email address?

Yes. Each cashier should use their own email address and Omella account.

Individual accounts make it easier to track activity, identify who processed a payment, manage access, and remove access when a cashier is no longer working with your organization.

Do not share one cashier account among multiple people.

Can a cashier be added to multiple Spaces?

Yes. A cashier can be added to multiple Spaces, but access must be granted separately in each Space.

When adding the cashier to each Space, assign the Assistant role manually. Membership in one Space does not automatically carry over to another Space.

What security information should I provide to cashiers?

Cashiers should receive only the access and information necessary to process payments.

Before the event:

  • Add each cashier to the appropriate Spaces as an Assistant.
  • Use a separate email address and account for each cashier.
  • Give cashiers access only to the Spaces and payment pages they need.
  • Confirm that each cashier can sign in to the Omella app.
  • Do not share administrator credentials.
  • Do not share financial reports, totals, or refund permissions unless they are specifically required for the cashier’s responsibilities.
  • Ask cashiers to keep their login information private.
  • Make sure cashiers lock their phone or tablet when stepping away from the station.
  • Remove access for temporary staff or volunteers after the event.

Can cashiers see financial totals?

No. Assistants can process payments through the pages assigned to them, but they cannot view page totals, reports, refunds, or other financial information.

What should I do if a cashier needs to process payments but does not have access?

Confirm that the cashier:

  1. Has their own Omella account and email address.
  2. Has been added to the correct Space.
  3. Has been assigned the Assistant role.
  4. Has been added manually to every other Space where they need access.
  5. Can sign in to the Omella app.

Test the account and payment page in advance so the cashier does not need to troubleshoot access during the event.

Battery and Charging

How long should I charge the Omella Go before using it?

Charge the reader for at least two hours before using it for the first time.

If the battery is completely empty, allow it to charge fully and then disconnect it.

Can I leave the Omella Go charging overnight?

Do not charge the reader continuously for more than 24 hours. Leaving it connected for extended periods may shorten the battery’s lifespan.

Can I use any charger?

No. Only use a PAX-approved power supply. Using an unsupported charger may damage the reader and void its warranty.

What do the battery indicator lights mean?

  • Green light: The battery level is above 20%.
  • Red light: The battery level is below 20%.
  • Flashing red light: The battery is too low, and the reader will turn off automatically.
  • Slowly flashing red light: The reader is charging.
  • Solid green light while charging: The reader is fully charged.

What does the orange light mean?

An orange light displayed alongside a solid red or green light means the reader has not yet been connected to a phone or tablet and is ready to pair.

Open the Omella app and select Enable Card Reader to connect it.

Connection Troubleshooting

Why can’t I find the Omella Go in the app?

Confirm that:

  • The Omella Go is turned on.
  • The reader has sufficient battery power.
  • Bluetooth is enabled on your phone or tablet.
  • The Omella app has permission to use Bluetooth.
  • The reader is close to your phone or tablet.
  • The reader is not already connected to another device.
  • You selected Omella Go under Enable Card Reader.

If the reader is connected to another phone or tablet, disconnect it from that device before trying again.

Why does the Omella Go keep disconnecting?

Check that:

  • The reader has sufficient battery power.
  • The reader remains close to your phone or tablet.
  • Bluetooth is still enabled.
  • The Omella app has permission to use Bluetooth.
  • The phone or tablet has a stable internet connection.
  • The reader is not trying to connect to another device.

If the issue continues, turn the reader off and on, reopen the Omella app, and try connecting again.

Why does the Omella Go keep turning off?

The battery may be too low. A flashing red light means the reader does not have enough power to remain on.

Connect it to a PAX-approved power supply and allow it to charge fully.

Why does the reader work on cellular data but not on Wi-Fi?

The Wi-Fi network may be blocking a domain or service required by Omella or the payment processor.

Review our Customer Guide: Firewall Settings and share it with your IT team.

Can a firewall cause the reader to appear unreachable?

Yes. If the reader displays a “device unreachable” message or cannot complete a payment while connected to the school’s network, required reader or payment domains may be blocked.

TLS inspection can also interfere with the reader’s secure connection. Your IT team may need to allow the required domains and add a TLS inspection bypass.

Payment Troubleshooting

Why isn’t the reader detecting a contactless card?

Try the following:

  • Hold the card within one inch of the reader.
  • Center it over the contactless area at the top.
  • Remove the card from a wallet containing other cards.
  • Keep the card still until it is detected.
  • Confirm that the card supports contactless payments.
  • Ask the customer to insert the card instead.

Why isn’t the reader recognizing a chip card?

Make sure the card is inserted completely and remains inside the reader until the transaction finishes.

If it is still not recognized, remove the card and try again. You can also ask the customer to tap or swipe the card if another payment method is available.

Why isn’t the reader recognizing a magnetic stripe card?

Make sure the magnetic stripe faces toward the reader and the card remains fully inserted in the slot while swiping.

Try again using one smooth, steady motion. If the problem continues, the card’s magnetic stripe may be damaged.

Why can’t the payment be processed?

Confirm that:

  • The Omella Go shows as connected in the app.
  • Your phone or tablet has a stable internet connection.
  • The reader has sufficient battery power.
  • The payment card is being presented correctly.
  • The school’s firewall is not blocking required payment services.

If possible, try another card or switch temporarily to a cellular connection to determine whether the issue is related to the card or the network.

What should I do if a payment fails during an event?

Before trying the payment again, confirm whether the original transaction appears in Omella. This helps prevent accidentally charging the customer twice.

If the transaction does not appear, check the reader and network connection before retrying.

Check the payment activity in Omella and confirm whether the transaction was approved. If you cannot confirm the result, contact Omella support before retrying the payment.

Security

How can I protect cashier access during an event?

Use individual cashier accounts whenever possible and assign the least amount of access required to perform the job.

Add each cashier to the required Spaces as an Assistant, using their own email address. Do not share administrator credentials or leave the Omella app unlocked and unattended. If a cashier leaves the station, they should lock the phone or tablet or sign out of the app.

After the event, review the list of users and remove access for anyone who no longer needs it.

What should I do if a cashier’s credentials are lost or compromised?

Immediately secure the account by changing the affected password or removing the user’s access.

Contact help@omella.com if you suspect unauthorized access or activity.

How can I tell if the Omella Go has been tampered with?

The Omella Go includes security mechanisms designed to detect whether the device has been opened or modified.

Stop using the reader if you see either of these patterns:

  • Blue indicators 1 and 4 are on: The reader may currently be compromised.
  • All four blue indicators are on: The reader may have been tampered with previously.

Do not attempt to open or repair the reader. Contact help@omella.com for assistance.

What should cashiers do if they suspect tampering?

Stop accepting payments immediately and disconnect the reader from the phone or tablet.

Do not use the reader, attempt to reset it, or open it. Keep it secure and contact Omella support for instructions.

Cleaning and Care

How should I clean the Omella Go?

Use a soft, lightly dampened cloth to clean the outside of the reader.

  • Do not use abrasive or industrial-strength cleaners.
  • Do not immerse the reader in water or another liquid.
  • Do not spray cleaning products directly into the reader or its ports.
  • Do not allow moisture to enter any openings.

How can I protect the Omella Go from damage?

  • Replace damaged charging cables immediately.
  • Do not insert foreign objects into the reader’s ports.
  • Keep the reader away from excessive heat and dust.
  • Avoid strong electromagnetic environments.
  • Do not shake, drop, or expose the reader to excessive vibration.
  • Do not attempt to open or repair the reader yourself.
